in patients with dementia

   Proposal Description:
   This study broadly aims to determine the association between the major sleep disorders that are prevalent among patients with dementia and the degree to which their cognitive ability declines. We also aim to examine taking medications and life styles as effect modifiers for this relationship. The results of this study will show how strong the relationship is between the different kinds of sleep disorders and the progression of cognitive disorders and will give a strong evidence on the importance of timely treatment of sleep disorder among patients with dementia. In addition, by identifying effect modifiers, this study will suggest possible ways of preventing cognitive aggravation attributable to sleep disorders. Specifically, this study will examine the following two hypothesis: 1) Having insomnia/hyposomnia is associated with a greater reduction of cognitive ability among people with dementia 2) This relationship will differ by taking sleep medications or life styles (such as drinking, obesity and smoking).
